What Your “Free” Website Is Really Costing You

March 10, 2026

A free website can feel like a smart move: get online quickly, spend nothing, crack on with the day job.

But for most growing businesses, “free” is rarely free. It’s paid for in lost visibility, lost trust, lost time, and (most importantly) lost revenue.

If you’re not showing up online, you’re invisible

Around 76% of customers Google a business before they buy anything. That means your website isn’t just a digital brochure it’s often the first real “sales conversation” a prospect has with you.

If your site is hard to find, slow to load, or looks unfinished, you’re not just missing clicks. You’re missing warm leads who were already interested.

You don’t fully own a free website

Most free website builders come with trade-offs:

  • You often can’t use your own domain properly (or you’re stuck with a subdomain that looks less credible)
  • You’re limited in what you can change, customise, or integrate
  • You can be pushed into upgrades later usually when you’re already busy

Your website should be an asset you control, not a platform you’re borrowing.

DIY websites often underperform (and it’s not your fault)

On average, DIY sites can perform up to 4x worse than professionally built websites.

That’s not because business owners aren’t capable, it’s because website performance is a mix of dozens of small details:

  • Layout and messaging that guides people to take action
  • Mobile usability
  • Image optimisation
  • Proper structure for search engines
  • Technical setup that keeps things fast and stable

Most free builders make those details harder, not easier.

Speed matters more than ever (especially with AI search)

Slow load times don’t just frustrate visitors; they reduce conversions.

And as more people search using AI platforms and assistants, speed and technical quality become even more important. If your site is slow, messy, or poorly structured, it’s less likely to be surfaced, recommended, or trusted.

SEO is usually not set up correctly

A common pattern I see: the site “looks fine”, but the foundations are missing.

That might mean:

  • Page titles and meta descriptions not set (or duplicated)
  • Headings used incorrectly
  • No clear keyword focus per page
  • Images that aren’t compressed and don’t have alt text
  • No tracking or measurement in place

So even if you’re posting on social media or networking hard, your website isn’t doing its job of pulling in consistent inbound leads.

The hidden cost: your time

The biggest cost of a free website is often the time you sink into it.

You can spend evenings tweaking layouts, fighting with templates, rewriting sections, and still not get close to the vision you have for your business.

That’s time you could be spending:

  • Serving clients
  • Following up leads
  • Improving delivery
  • Building partnerships
  • Scaling

A proper website unlocks automation (and gives you time back)

When you have a site you can properly manage, you can connect it to your CRM and set up automated workflows.

For example:

  • Enquiry forms that create leads automatically
  • Follow-up emails that go out instantly
  • Lead routing to the right person
  • Quote requests that trigger tasks and reminders

Working this way can save up to 7 hours per week, improve visibility, and strengthen your brand because you’re in control.
